Meniere's Disease

This is a disorder of the inner ear that causes spontaneous episodes of vertigo- a sensation of a spinning motion along with fluctuating hearing loss, tinnitus and sometimes a feeling of fullness or pressure in one's ears. Individuals in their 40s and 50s are more likely than people in other age groups to develop Meniere's disease but it can also occur in children.

The symptoms of Meniere's disease include:

• Frequent episodes of vertigo
• Hearing loss
• Ringing in the ear
• Feeling of fullness in the ear

Scientists have proposed a number of causes or triggers, including:

• Head trauma
• Migraines
• Viral infection
• Allergies
• Abnormal immune response
• Improper fluid drainage or Anatomic abnormality

No single cause has been identified hence it is likely that this condition is caused by a combination of factors.

Here are a few self help measures that can help reduce the impact of Meniere's disease:

• Make it a point to rest during and after attacks and don't rush to return to your normal activities
• Sit or lie down immediately whenever you feel dizzy
• Avoid driving if you experience frequent episodes of vertigo
• Be conscious of the possibility of losing your balance and consider walking with a cane for stability if you have chronic balance problems
• Limit your salt intake as it can increase fluid retention
• Eat regularly
• Avoid monosodium glutamate (MSG) as it can contribute to fluid retention
• Avoid caffeine
• Quit smoking
• Avoid allergens
• Migraine management can lessen the severity of this condition

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any signs or symptoms of Meniere's disease!
