Folliculitis

Folliculitis is the inflammation of one or more hair follicles and can occur anywhere on the skin often infected with Staphylococcus aureus or other bacteria. There are variations of folliculitis known as hot tub folliculitis and barber' itch. Severe infections can cause permanent scarring and hair loss. Mild folliculitis can be uncomfortable and upsetting.

One is more likely to get folliculitis if he or she:

• Uses a hot tub or swimming pool that is not treated with chlorine
• Uses antibiotics or steroid creams for a long period
• Uses substances that irritate or block the hair follicles such as make up, cocoa butter
• Have HIV or diabetes that lowers one's ability to fight infection
• Trauma to your skin from injury or surgery
• Obesity

Here are a few ways to relieve discomfort and prevent the infection from spreading:

• Avoid shaving irritated skin
• Don't scratch the bumps
• Don't share clothes and towels
• Gently wash the infected skin twice a day
• Avoid using oils on your skin as oils can trap bacteria in the pores of your skin and cause folliculitis
• Apply a warm, moist washcloth to the affected area several times a day

If the infection doesn't improve, see your doctor as you may need antibiotics to help control problem!
