Know the Signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder begins before the age of 3 and lasts throughout a person's life, although symptoms tend to improve over time. The exact cause of autism remains mysterious and the early signs of autism don't come out of nowhere. Despite the fact that it is quite difficult to balance watchfulness and worry when it comes to our children's health, it's vital to know what to look for, as early intervention can be so important in the treatment of autism. Keep in mind that no two children with autism are exactly the same.

Here's a list of red flags that encompass social skills, behaviour and language (Mayo Clinic):

• Has poor eye contact
• Appears not to hear you at times
• Fails to respond to his or her own name
• Resists cuddling and holding
• No babbling or pointing or other gestures by 12 months
• Prefers to play alone and retreats into his or her own world
• Starts talking later than age 2 and has other developmental delays by 30 months
• Loss of previously acquired ability to say words or sentences
• Avoids making eye contact when making requests
• Speaks in an abnormal rhythm or tone
• Trouble starting a conversation or keeping one going
• Repeats words or phrases, but doesn't understand how to use them
• Repetitive movements such as rocking, hand flapping, spinning
• Becomes disturbed at the slightest change in routines
• Moves constantly
• Unusually sensitive to light, sound, touch and yet oblivious to pain

If you're concerned about any of these symptoms or your child has exhibited some early signs of autism, contact your paediatrician at the earliest!
