Salmonella Poisoning

Salmonella is a type of bacteria. It ususally attacks your stomach and intestines, irrespective of age and gender.  It's caused by eating unhygienically prepared food or undercooked food or improperly stored food.  Meats, eggs and milk when not handled properly or stored the right way, can become infected with salmonella which in turn enters the human body when eaten. Ready to eat foods like mayonnaise, ice-cream, pastries, burgers, etc which use milk, egg and / or meat can become a source of salmonella poisoning if they are not cooked or stored properly.

Symptoms of salmonella infection include loose stools, headache, nausea and vomiting.  There might be blood in the stools in some cases.  Most mild infections clear up within a week's time.  However, it might be wise to consult your doctor, especially if the loose stools persist for more than a day.

To prevent salmonella poisoning, eat only hygienically prepared and well cooked food.  Do not eat raw foods if you are not sure of the source.
