Swine flu is a type of disease which occurs due to viral infection of h1n1 influenza virus. In 2009 swine flu was detected in USA for first time. Swine flu (h1N1) has now become a global disease.

The condition is often confused with other common health issues due to similar clinical manifestations such as;

  • Body aches and headaches
  • Cough & cold
  • Fever
  • Sore throats
  • Decreased appetite
  • Runny nose
  • Nausea
  • Stomach upset
  • General weakness

Children affected may also experience seizures or mental health changes. Children, pregnant women, obese individuals and those with respiratory and neurologic disorders are more vulnerable to swine flu. Naturally, patients having cancer or HIV may also catch this disease easily like most other diseases.

Early laboratory diagnosis is significant to confirm swine flu, one can prevent the onset of the flu by following simple practices:

  • Follow personal hygiene - washing hands, using clean cooking utensils, maintaining a separate napkin to wipe your nose and mouth, using a separate drinking water glass, etc. Can be simple ways to prevent the spread of the infection.
  • Public health advises such as school closures, travel regulations, isolation if medically prescribed and keeping a good distance from potential crowds are preventive measures that can be taken.
  • Drink enough water to keep yourself hydrated.
  • Avoid close contact with infected people.
  • Get enough rest.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables to keep your immunity going.
