The Honeymoon Syndrome - Symptoms, Causes, Prevention and Treatment

Oh, dear! Honeymoon is the most romantic time for couples with lots of lovemaking, laughter, emotional moments, and a dream vacay for some. But sometimes excess lovemaking can be painful. Newlywed brides often face an upsetting phase post-honeymoon. Honeymoon syndrome also referred to as "cystitis" is a common (Urinary Tract Infection) UTI experienced by women after they have had sexual intercourse for the first time or when women indulge in sexual activity after a long period.

Symptoms of Cystitis

Cystitis or inflammation of the bladder wall is characterized by symptoms such as-

  • Burning sensation while urinating
  • Frequent urination
  • Painful consecutive intercourse

Causes

It occurs due to rough intercourse when the penis upsets the wall of the bladder and bacterias (generally E.coli that is present around the anus) enter through the vagina which causes inflammation.

Do Men Experience Honeymoon Syndrome?

Only women experience this syndrome frequently as the female urethra is much shorter in length and can easily encounter a bladder infection leading to the buildup of E.coli in the bladder. But it can happen to anyone regardless of gender, so yes men can experience honeymoon syndrome.

Is Honeymoon Syndrome Harmful During Pregnancy?

As per a study, pregnant women are at risk of UTI, especially after the 6th month due to the decline in the bladder and urethral tone. However, having cystitis during pregnancy won’t really harm the baby but if you are stuck in such a situation, it is advised to start the treatment phase as soon as possible. Delays in treatment can spread the infection and affect the kidney badly, which can further create issues like premature or underweight babies.

How to Prevent and Treat Cystitis?

More than half of the women population are known to experience this condition. Women with diabetes are at a higher risk as the infection can spread quickly to kidneys when compared to women without such complications. However, good hygiene practices can prevent a recurrence. Bacterial infections in the bladder can be prevented/treated by-

  • Drinking plenty of water and other fluids. Having cranberry juice regularly is the most effective and natural way of treating honeymoon syndrome.
  • Urinating frequently and urinating after intercourse also helps in getting rid of the bacteria.
  • It is also advised to avoid coffee, citrus juices, sodas, and excessively spicy foods as these increase irritation in the intimate areas.
  • Using vaginal lubricant to avoid dryness and rough intercourse.
  • You can go for an antibiotic course and skincare medication which would last for 3-4 days but do not risk your health by taking unprescribed medicines. In between your honeymoon? Who Doesn’t Enjoy Carefree Lovemaking?

The best way to avoid honeymoon syndrome is to be aware of when to take a break and take preventive measures as discussed. If the problem persists for a prolonged period or becomes extremely severe, visit a gynecologist. Feel free to share what you experience and accept health checkups if recommended.
