Tonsillitis is a common condition that involves inflammation of the tonsils, which are two oval-shaped glands located at the back of the throat. These glands play a role in the body’s immune system by helping to fight infections, especially in children. However, they can become infected, leading to symptoms such as a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, and swollen lymph nodes. Tonsillitis can be caused by either viral or bacterial infections, with viral causes being more common. Bacterial tonsillitis, particularly due to Streptococcus pyogenes (group A strep), may require antibiotic treatment. While the condition is often mild and resolves on its own, some cases can be severe or recurrent, potentially requiring surgical removal of the tonsils (tonsillectomy).Early recognition and appropriate management are important to relieve symptoms, prevent complications, and reduce the risk of transmission.
