Asperger's Syndrome

This is a developmental disorder that affects an individual's ability to socialize and communicate effectively with others. Asperger's syndrome is grouped with other conditions that are called autistic spectrum disorders or pervasive developmental disorders.

Symptoms of Asperger's syndrome vary and can range from mild to severe. The symptoms of Asperger's syndrome include:

• Problems with social skills
• Unusual preoccupation or rituals that a child refuses to alter
• Unusual nonverbal communication such as lack of eye contact or awkward body postures and gestures
• Unable to understand, empathize with or be sensitive towards others' feelings
• Poor coordination and moving clumsily
• Intense and almost obsessive interest in a few areas such as maps and sports or weather schedules
• Exceptionally skilled or talented in a particular area such as math or music
• Repetitive behaviours such as finger twisting

The exact cause of Asperger's syndrome is unclear, but doctors suggest that it may be inherited. The disorder also seems to be linked to changes in the structure of the brain.

If you notice that your child's behaviour interferes with learning and social development, contact your doctor for a comprehensive evaluation!
