Coping with a miscarriage!

The loss of a baby, irrespective of how early in pregnancy, is real and so is the grief that comes with it. Miscarriage can happen to anybody regardless of race, health, economic class, age or other factors. Experts say that women over 35 are more likely to miscarry than women in their 20s. Certain uterine abnormalities, genetic or immune factors as well as having certain diseases such as diabetes, lupus, and low progesterone may also contribute to miscarriage.

Tips to cope with a miscarriage:

• Having a miscarriage is a chromosomal problem and usually has nothing to do with any neglect on your part. But, if you've been told that your actions or negligence has caused the miscarriage, it's time to forgive yourself.
• Stop stressing because not only will your body be experiencing physical changes or discomfort but even your mental state will be off balance. Practice relaxation techniques such as yoga and deep breathing.
• You may not want to be around people, constantly answering their questions about the loss of your baby. Take time off and get away from it all for a while.
• Deal with the pain, don't run away from it. Filling the void with alcohol or food or trying to get pregnant right away to forget it won't work. "The only way to get through it is to go through it". Regain your strength and ensure your mind is healed.
• Don't forget your partner and don't take your anger and frustration out on him. But when you do so, make sure you apologise!
• You can choose to be a victim or a survivor. Be a survivor by focusing on all the wonderful things you have in your life and the great things that will continue to happen.
• Don't be scared to get counselling. Just by having someone to speak to will help you untangle the range of emotions you will experience.
