Pinworm infection refers to an infection of the large intestine and anal area by a small white parasite that resembles a worm. This often occurs in school-aged children and preschoolers. Pinworm infection can spread from person to person as the pinworm eggs can survive up to two weeks on bedding, clothing or other objects. Sometimes, infection is acquired when these eggs are accidentally swallowed, often due to inadequate hand washing by parents and children. The eggs present on bedding or objects that are touched while the eggs are still viable can also cause infection or reinfection.
