Are your Nails Spotted?

You notice those mysterious white spots on your fingernails, yet again, and you search for means to hide it. But have you wondered why they occur?

The medical term for these spots is ‘Leukonychia' and can be seen on fingernails and toenails. There are several possible causes for the discoloration of the nail, the most common being:

  • Mild injury or trauma to the nail bed: Banging or bending the nail while moving your hand may develop a spot that shows up long after u have forgotten about it.
  • Underlying infection: Like fungus, yeast or mold. These kinds of spots develop at the tip of the nail or near the cuticle.
  • Allergic reaction: It may be caused by an allergic reaction to the nail color or the nail color remover that you are using.
  • Nutritional deficiency: It may be due to calcium or zinc deficiency.

If you notice these spots rarely, and if they are not accompanied by any other symptoms, then treatment is not necessary. They will disappear as the nails grow out. If they reappear frequently, then you may need medical attention.
