Ganglion Cysts

These are noncancerous lumps that commonly develop along the joints and tendons of one's wrists or hands. They may also occur in the ankles and feet. Ganglion cysts are round or oval and are filled with a jelly-like fluid. It's not quite clear as to what causes a ganglion cyst. But there are theories that suggest that it could be the body responding to an injury, trauma or overuse by forming an internal blister. Another theory suggests that small tears in the tendon membrane or joint capsule allow the contents to squeeze out and form this lump.

The symptoms of ganglion cysts include:

• The lump is usually soft and immobile
• The lump is able to change its size
• The lump is painful particularly those at the base of fingers
• Noticeable lump or swelling
• The affected tendon may cause a sensation of muscular weakness
• The back of one's hands and wrists are commonly affected
• Other areas include the back of the knee, ankle, foot, palm and fingers
• The pain is made worse by moving any nearby joints

In most cases, ganglion cysts go away by themselves without any medical treatment but if you experience pain and discomfort, it's important to see your doctor so that a proper diagnosis can be made.
