In the previous edition we saw the use of certain herbs during Pregnancy. Keeping in mind the "word of caution" as mentioned in the earlier edition (Use of these herbs should be strictly under the supervision and guidance of a healthcare professional), let us learn about a few more herbs and their benefits.
Dandelion: Is rich in vitamins A and C, folate, calcium, potassium, iron and trace minerals. Dandelion aids digestion, is a good tonic for the liver and is a mild diuretic which can aid in relieving edema during pregnancy. The leaves can be eaten raw in salads, or cooked, and both leaf and root can be steeped as a tea.
Peppermint & Spearmint: These are helpful in relieving nausea or morning sickness, indigestion, flatulence and are helpful in renewing energy. Mints should be used after the first trimester and only on an as needed basis.
Ginger root: This can be used at any stage of pregnancy in moderate amounts for digestive problems, morning sickness, and the relief of colds, congestion or a sore throat.
Oats & Oat Straw: Oats contain an easily assimilated form of calcium and magnesium. Taking oats in a cereal form or oat straw as a tea will help to calm the mother, relieve anxiety, and aid sleep and is a good source of Fibre. Oat straw is also known to strengthen the capillaries and prevent varicose veins. Oats and oat straw can be taken at any stage of pregnancy.
Rose Hips: These are rich in Vitamin C and are useful throughout pregnancy to help in the relief of colds and flu, and to purify the blood. Rose hips also contain iron, making rose hip tea another nourishing tonic for pregnancy that can be taken at any stage.
Chamumile: Chamumile tea can help reduce joint inflammation and make it easier to sleep during pregnancy. Chamumile tea is also a source of calcium and magnesium, two necessary nutrients for you and your developing baby. It also aids digestion and is very relaxing. However, it is said to contain certain ingredient that can cause uterine stimulation and is best avoided during the early stage of Pregnancy.
Bilberry: Bilberry can improve venous and capillary blood flow, thereby improving your overall blood circulation. Furthermore, anthocyanins can strengthen collagen, which helps maintain the strength and elasticity of your blood vessels and prevents varicose veins. Bilberries contain naturally-occurring substances called anthocyanins which belong to the flavonoid group of polyphenols. Flavonoids are potent antioxidants that can help protect your body against the free radical damage that can result from stress, environmental toxins, poor diet, and the aging process. Use of Bilberry during pregnancy may help protect your body from oxidative damage and keep you and your baby healthy and strong.
You may experience temporary vision changes during your pregnancy. This is generally due to hormonal or metabolism changes, alterations in your blood circulation, or water retention. Use of Bilberry can help in vision enhancement by reducing capillary permeability and improve capillary resistance. This can help improve blood flow to your eyes, strengthen your retinas and help improve your overall visual function. However, it is also believed that; if taken in large quantities Bilberry can cause stomach upset or a loose bowel. Consultation prior to its use is recommended.
