Scoliosis

This is a sideways curvature of the spine that occurs most often during the growth spurt just before puberty. However, it can be seen at any age but is most common in those over 10 years of age.

When a person with scoliosis is viewed from the front or back, the spine appears to be curved. Scoliosis is about two to three times more common in girls than boys. Doctors aren't quite sure what the exact cause is, although, it appears to involve hereditary factors because the disorder tends to run in families. Other types of scoliosis may be caused by:

• Birth defects affecting the development of the bones of the spine
• Injuries or infections of the spine
• Neuromuscular conditions such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy

The symptoms and signs of scoliosis may include:

• Uneven waist
• Uneven shoulders
• One shoulder blade that appears more prominent than the other
• One hip higher than the other

If you notice any signs or symptoms of scoliosis in your child, contact your doctor for a proper diagnosis!
