Ease Out Constipation in your Baby!

Constipation is a common problem in toddlers and it can be very difficult to identify whether the baby is constipated or not. Constipation is more common in formula fed babies than breast fed babies. It is also important to note that even if your baby finds it hard to pass stools, it may not necessarily mean he is constipated. However, you will slowly learn to recognise your baby's signs of being constipated.

Look out for these signs if you feel that your baby is constipated.

• Crying, discomfort and irritability before or while passing stools
• Hard belly
• Loss of appetite
• Lesser than three bowel movements in a week.
• Hard pellet like stools
• Foul smelling wind and stools

How to treat your baby's constipation?

You can try these tips to ease out your baby's distress.

• Gently move your baby's legs in a cycling motion, to ease out the hard potty.
• If your baby is on formula feed, give him more water in between meals.
• If you have started with solids for your baby, add two tablespoons of pureed prunes to your baby's breakfast or give her two to three teaspoons of prune juice.
• If the baby is a year old, you can try giving her fruits, peaches and plums. Add vegetables like peas, carrot, spinach and cabbage in small amounts into the diet to increase the fibre content.

Do not give any kind of herbal or homeopathic laxative without consulting with your doctor. With your attention and time, your baby will have easier, regular bowel movements.
