Drug Addiction

Drug addiction is the dependence on an illegal drug or medication. People experiment with drugs for different reasons; some may first try out of curiosity or to ease another problem such as stress and anxiety. This can cause long term consequences, including problems with mental, physical, relationships, law and employment.

Drug addiction is a complex disorder; repeated use can alter the way one's brain looks and functions. Changes in a person's brain can interfere with his or her ability to think clearly, control behaviour and feel normal without drugs.

Here are a few common signs of drug addiction:

• Neglecting your responsibilities at work or home because of drug use
• Drug use leading to problems in relationships such as fights with your partner or family members
• You seem to need to use more of the drug to experience the same effects you used to achieve with smaller amounts
• You use drugs to avoid or relieve withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, nausea, anxiety sweating or shaking
• Your life revolves around drug use
• You've neglected activities you used to enjoy because of drug use
• You continue using drugs, despite knowing it's causing major problems in your life such as mood swings, blackouts and paranoia but you use them anyway
• Doing things to obtain the drug that you normally wouldn't do such as stealing
• Spending a lot of money on the drug even though you know you cannot afford it

Recognizing that you have a problem is the first step on the path to recovery, one that takes great strength and courage. The sooner you seek help, the greater your chances are for a long-term recovery!
